CASSVILLE, Mo. —
The Missouri Department of Conservation and The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will host the second Kids Fishing Day of 2012 on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Roaring River State Park. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. and will continue until 8 p.m. The park is located on Missouri Highway112 about seven miles south of Cassville.
A similar event was held in May.
Children ages 15 and under will be able to pick up free trout tags at the hatchery office any time on Friday, Aug. 17, or on the day of the event. A portion of the fishing area of the park will be reserved for children that day.
Parents are welcome to help children, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves.
Volunteers also will be on hand to help out with the event. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment.
Free hotdogs, chips, and soda will be available 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bluegrass music will be performed on the prize stage throughout the day.
Since education also is part of Kids’ Fishing Day. Seminar topics for the day include fish cleaning, fish cooking, knife sharpening, knot tying, fly tying and fly casting and how to fish Roaring River. A hatchery tour will be held to show how trout are raised. A program on Missouri Snakes will be given using live specimens.
Children attending three classes will receive a choice of prizes and will be entered into a drawing for other prizes. The drawing will be held at 5 p.m. Random tag numbers will be drawn throughout the day that will be redeemable for prizes. Other prizes will be awarded for catching specially tagged trout. Children must be present to win. Classes are also open to the whole family, but only children may enter the drawings.
