Pitt State planning week of activities for football homecoming

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Pittsburg State University will celebrate Homecoming Week with seven days of activities beginning this weekend and leading up to the football game against Missouri Western State University on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The theme for homecoming this year is “Pitt Games.”

Activities begin Sunday with a Stamp Out Hunger food-packaging event sponsored by the Student Government Association. Volunteers will gather in the U-Club of the Overman Student Center at 2 p.m. that day to package dehydrated, high-protein meals that will be distributed to food programs in developing countries.

At 7 p.m. Monday, king and queen candidates will participate in Presentation Night in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of the Overman Student Center. At that event, the top six men and top six women will be selected. Voting for homecoming king and queen begins online Tuesday through the GUS system at 10 a.m. Voting is open to all students. At 4 p.m., the spirit art contest will begin in the Overman Student Center. Gorilla Games will begin at 7 p.m. that day at the Weede Tennis Courts.

Voting for homecoming king and queen closes at 10 a.m. Wednesday. At noon, the Homecoming Convocation and the Lambda Sigma canned food drive will be held at Carnie Smith Stadium. Lambda Sigma will collect food and diapers for distribution through Wesley House. At the convocation, the 2012 Homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

On Thursday, the Yell Like Hell spirit contest will be held at 7 p.m. in Carnie Smith Stadium. Audience members should enter the stadium through the east side gates.

On Friday, the PSU Alumni and Constituent Relations Office will hold A Taste of Pittsburg at 7 p.m. in the Sullivan Courtyard at the Kansas Technology Center. At that event, the university will present the 2012 outstanding alumni awards. Reservations are required by calling 620-235-4758.

On Saturday, Homecoming Day begins with the traditional Homecoming Parade at 9 a.m. in downtown Pittsburg. Following the parade, GorillaFest, the community tailgate party in Gorilla Village, will begin on the east side of the stadium. Homecoming awards, including the sweeps trophy, will be presented at noon in the gazebo.
