NEVADA, Mo. —
A Nevada man, who was injured at 4:58 p.m. Friday when a tractor-trailer rig slammed into the Quick Dine restaurant in Nevada, remained in critical condition Monday at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.
John Becker, 72, of Nevada, was being treated at the hospital, according to Christen Stark, spokeswoman for the hospital.
A second person who was injured in the accident, Roger Berning, 60, of El Dorado Springs, has been discharged from the hospital, she said.
The accident killed Joseph E. Cole, 54, of Nevada, said to be a regular customer at the restaurant at 1331 N. Osage Blvd. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another diner, Pamela S. Hoover, 47, of Nevada, sustained moderate injuries. She was taken to Nevada Regional Medical Center.
On Monday, the city of Nevada issued a demolition permit for the property, which has operated for nearly 60 years. Kuan Kuan Butterfield, owner of the restaurant since 1988, could not be reached for comment on Monday about whether she intends to rebuild.
A spokeswoman for the Nevada-Vernon County Chamber of Commerce said a local business, Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, has offered jobs to the restaurant workers who have lost their jobs.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when Patrick Crews, 25, of Nevada, driver of a westbound car, pulled from a stop sign and into the path of a tractor-trailer unit driven by Daniel R. Coffman, 60, of Nevada, who was coming off the ramp at the U.S. 71 Business exit.
The truck driver tried unsuccessfully to avoid hitting the car, and then slammed into the restaurant, the patrol said. Neither driver was injured.
