PITTSBURG, Kan. —
An relief effort for victims of Hurricane Sandy will get underway today at Pittsburg Community Middle School, spearheaded by a school counselor who knows what’s needed when it comes to disaster clean-up.
A month after the Joplin tornado, Teresa Spangler was trained by Crisis Response International, a non-profit organization that mobilizes volunteers, churches and other organizations to respond to disasters.
When Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, Spangler decided to respond by organizing a collection directed toward the relief workers who are helping in the clean-up.
“Starting today and going through Monday, Nov. 19, our focus is collecting items to be used for that clean-up,” Spangler said.
Those items include a lengthy list of tools — brooms, plastic trash cans, trash bags, hammers, work gloves, utility knives, batteries, rakes, extension cords, wheelbarrows — as well as items that will help the workers themselves.
Donations can be dropped of at Pittsburg Community Middle School or arrangements can be made by calling the school at 620-235-3240.
