CARTHAGE, Mo. —
After months of detours, motorists now can use a new Highway 96 bridge over Spring River on the east edge of Carthage.
The new bridge was reopened to traffic at mid-day on Wednesday, according to an announcement from the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The route was closed starting May 30 for the replacement project. Detour routes posted by the state directed traffic onto Highway 37, Jasper County Route E and Highway 571 to get around the project. That forced extra monitoring by Carthage police to keep big trucks off the bridges on North Garrison Avenue, which are limited to 9 tons.
