The Grass Roots to headline Route 66 concerts

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Grass Roots has been announced as the headliner for concerts to be held as part of the Route 66 International Festival slated Aug. 1-3.

Two nights of concerts are planned. A show on Friday, Aug. 2, will be staged at Galena, Kan., featuring The Road Crew and The Detectives. There will be two stages on Saturday, Aug. 3, in Joplin. The band City Limits and artist Jesse McEntire will perform on one stage. The main stage will offer performances by the bands Walrus, The Road Crew and The Grass Roots. Concert times are yet to be determined.

The festival celebrates the heritage of Route 66 and is held in different cities along the route each year. This year the festival will be headquartered in downtown Joplin with activities also extending into Kansas. A number of activities and vendors related to the historic highway will be part of the festival.

Route 66 originally weaved its way through Joplin from Range Line through the Royal Heights neighborhood and onto Langston-Hughes Broadway, before making its way to Main and onto Seventh Street. The route was redesignated two other times through Joplin, at one time coming from West Seventh Street through the city.
