Carthage adjusts classrooms as kindergarten numbers grow

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Classes will start Aug. 15 in the Carthage School District, and enrollment is under way for students who are new to the Carthage area.

Based on pre-enrollment from last May, district officials already know they’ll have a record crop of kindergartners, and they have made changes over the summer to accommodate those larger numbers, according to Mark Baker, assistant superintendent for business.

“We’re expecting over 400 students in kindergarten this year,” he said. “We’ve been setting new records for kindergarten enrollment every year.”

A fourth kindergarten class has been added at Steadley Elementary School, and four early childhood special education classes have been moved from Steadley to rented space at Fairview Christian Church.

“We’re using the east wing of their education facility,” Baker said. “We have our own separate entrance, and they’ve allowed us to add security doors so we’re secure from the rest of the building and we don’t interfere with what’s going on at the church.”

Two more kindergarten classes are being added at Fairview Elementary School, so Title I preschool formerly held there has been moved to Steadley.

“We had four classrooms there, and with the additional kindergarten and two preschool classes, there’s one left,” Baker said.

With the changes, all the classrooms are taken at Fairview Elementary. The district is using one trailer at Columbian Elementary and has added another at Mark Twain Elementary.

Baker said growth in the elementary grades has heightened the district’s concern about space at Carthage Middle School, where there is only one open classroom.

“The teachers’ workroom is in the girls locker room downstairs, at the gym,” he said.

Junior high enrollment for new students starts today at Carthage Junior High. Seventh-graders will enroll from 9 a.m. to noon today, eighth-graders from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Junior high students who enrolled in the spring may pick up schedules and receive locker assignments on Wednesday, with seventh-graders set for 9 a.m. to noon, eighth-graders for 1 to 3 p.m.

Open enrollment for new high school students will continue through the start of the school year. Hours are 8 to 11 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. at the high school.

All high school students except freshmen who enrolled in the spring may pick up schedules today and Tuesday at the high school. Hours will be noon to 3 p.m. today for seniors; 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday for juniors; and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday for sophomores.

Freshman orientation, for all students starting at the high school, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Friday at the high school. Students will receive information about high school procedures, and pick up their schedules and locker assignments.

Open house for Carthage Middle School will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, with open house for the high school and technical center set for 6 to 8 p.m. Open house for the district’s five elementary schools will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13. Activities also are set for Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Carthage Junior High, with orientation for new seventh-graders set for 6 to 6:30 p.m., seventh-grade open house set for 6:30 to 7 p.m., and eighth-grade open house slated for 7:30 to 8 p.m. Orientation for Spanish language students will be from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
