Crime down nearly 19 percent in Newton County for 2013

NEOSHO, Mo. — Overall crime in Newton County dropped by nearly 19 percent in 2013,  when compared with 2012, according to a crime statistics report issued by the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said his department increased its focus on solving burglaries after a substantial increase in 2012.

‘We had special units using off-duty officers in unmarked cars,” Copeland said. “High crime areas were saturated. Known burglars were targeted. It helped us a lot.”

He said the department also was assisted by Neighborhood Watch programs and other vigilant residents who called in suspicious activity.
