Pittsburg kicks off season of art walks

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Pittsburg ArtWalk will kick off its season Friday in downtown Pittsburg from 5 to 9 p.m. with more than 40 artists and organizations and a few new components.

“This season is sure to be our best,” said Heather Horton, one of the organizers.

Modeled after a farmer’s market, a new “Artist Market” will be located at Second and Broadway inside the Pritchett Pavilion and is geared to those who want to sell their work and talk with patrons. Live music and food vendors also will be on site.

Also new this year is “stART Your Engines Car Show,” located in the US Bank parking lot at Fourth and Broadway starting at 5 p.m. Car owners can register ahead of time at Sweet Designs Cakery, Chatter’s or Vietti’s in Pittsburg, or sign up the day of the event. Visitors will have the opportunity to paint a 1971 Nova. Proceeds from the car show will benefit ArtWalk mural projects.

To recognize and celebrate National Poetry month, SEK Poets and JST Bobby G’s will host an Open Mic Poetry reading from 6 to 7:30 p.m. during ArtWalk at JST Bobby G’s, 108 W. Sixth St.

At BMO Harris parking lot, 417 N. Broadway, SEK Now will host a community weaving project and KMH Photography will have a photo booth. At Phillipe’s, 111 N. Pine, Hippe Clay will present live demonstrations.

A reveal of sketches by the artists chosen to paint giant football statues as part of SEK Art Fest will be made in the windows of the National Bank Building at Fourth and Broadway. In addition, the first downtown mural project will be unveiled on the corner of Broadway and West Fifth Street.

The event also will include live music at Europe Park, face painting and more.
