Miami police to be host for OSBI agent’s office

MIAMI, Okla. — The Miami Police Department is the base of operations for Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent Jeremy Yerton, said Miami police Chief George Haralson.

Haralson said after the retirement of the area’s OSBI agent two years ago, the nearest agent has been based in Tulsa. He said that previously, OSBI agents in the area worked from their homes, but Yerton will have an office at the Miami police station.

Haralson said Yerton is new to the OSBI, but he worked 19 years for the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Department. Haralson said Yerton worked for him as a detective when he was at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Department.

“I’m happy to be here,” Yerton said. “He was my captain.”

Yerton said his first week on the job was spent introducing himself to the district attorney and people at the area police and sheriff’s departments.

“We’ve hit the ground running,” Yerton said.

Haralson said Yerton will investigate crimes in Ottawa, Craig and Delaware counties when the OSBI is called. He said there are many benefits to having an agent based locally.

“His response time will be a lot quicker than it would if he’s coming from Tulsa,” Haralson said.

He said there also would be better flow of information

“If he’s here day in and day out, there’s a better working relationship,” he said.

Haralson said Yerton will be a good addition.

“We’re glad to have him,” he said.

Stan Florence, OSBI director, said Yerton will assist when he is needed.

“By law, we have to be requested,” Florence said. “We’re here to be of assistance. We’ll bring to the table whatever we need to bring. We don’t take over cases from local authorities.”

Agreement

Stan Florence, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigator director, on Friday joined Miami police Chief George Haralson at the Miami police station, where they signed an agreement making official the OSBI office in Miami.
