New sidewalks coming to Carl Junction

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — City officials have secured more funding from the Missouri Department of Transportation to enhance a long-running sidewalk project along Route Z near Carl Junction High School.

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, City Administrator Steve Lawver said the city was approved for two separate grants, totaling $449,000, for use on Pennell and Roney streets, and Route Z. The city has worked for years on improving the sidewalks near the schools, including finishing up improvements from Roney Street to Memorial Park.

“This comes down to the safety issue, and there are so many kids that use those streets and are forced to either walk on the streets or through the grass near the ditches,” Lawver said. “This hasn’t been a council focus, but a citizen focus for seven years. Our people want this and have supported this.”

Lawver said most of the sidewalk improvements in the city have been paid for by MoDOT grants. He estimated that the city has spent $60,000 of its own money, with $300,000 more coming from MoDOT. But, this project will cost the city more than it has paid in the past.

“This portion will run $130,000 because we are dealing with storm drains,” Lawver said. “For what we have got out of this, it hasn’t cost that much for the city.”

The council on Tuesday approved a measure for the city to move forward to the consultation phase of the project so that construction plans can be made.
