CAIR to confer award on Joplin mosque

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Islamic Society of Joplin will receive one of the top awards from the Council on American-Islamic Relations when it holds its annual conference Saturday in Arlington, Va.

CAIR, a national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will give the mosque its 2012 Courage Award, for courage in the face of adversity.

The mosque was destroyed Aug. 6 in suspicious fire for which there has been no cause determined and no arrests. That fire came after an arson fire on July 4. Surveillance video shows a suspect approaching the mosque and throwing a package on the roof of the building after he ignited the package. That fire caused minor exterior damage.

Another CAIR award , the 2012 Solidarity Award, will go to the Sikh temple in Wisconsin where six worshippers died in a shooting spree by a white supremacist.
