NEOSHO, Mo. —
Some of the Newton County residents who led the fight to block a Moark expansion several years ago say they see no point now in fighting the company’s latest plans. Nor will they try to stop Moark from getting new state construction and operating permits.
One leader of the campaign in 2005 thought it was a “foregone conclusion” that the state will grant Moark’s latest permit requests.
Moark’s Newton County neighbors, including Richard Betz, learned last month about the company’s plans to expand its current egg-laying operations by 2.2 million chickens. Betz, who lives on Owl Road next to one of Moark’s farms, said he received a “neighbor notification” letter Oct. 25.
The company said in the letter that it intends to build four new layer houses at its Hathaway site, which will house a total of 1.2 million laying hens. Moark also said it plans to build nine new pullet houses at its nearby Timberview site to replace all of the existing layer houses there.
“This will reduce the layer population by approximately 440,050 layers and add approximately 1,400,000 pullets at the Timberview location,” the letter states.
