Man who died while scuba diving identified as New Yorker

ORONOGO, Mo. — A man who died on Saturday while scuba diving at Captain John’s Sports and Scuba park has been identified as Miguel Perez-Troche, 55, of Vestal, N.Y., according to Oronogo police Chief Jeff Fries.

Perez-Troche, who had at least 15 years of experience in diving, was diving at 179 feet on Saturday, Fries said. He apparently surfaced too quickly and was later pronounced dead at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.

Preliminary autopsy results showed that Perez-Troche had an enlarged heart and damage to his lungs from rising to the surface too quickly, Fries said.

Fries said it is unclear whether Perez-Troche rose to the surface because of a medical issue or because of equipment failure. His diving equipment is being checked for defects or damage, he said.
