Missouri American Water is offering tips on how to reduce lost water this week, which has been declared “Fix a Leak Week” by the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to those tips, residents should:

• Regularly check toilets, faucets and pipes for leaks. Leak detection kits are available from the water company by calling 1-866-430-0820 or visiting the “Learning Center” of the company’s Web site.

• Tighten connections on showerheads if drips appear when the shower is off.

• Ensure the rubber flapper in the toilet is not worn down.

“Leaks can account for an average of 10,000 gallons wasted in the home every year, or enough to fill a backyard swimming pool,” said Frank Kartmann, president of Missouri American Water, in a statement.
