JOPLIN, Mo. —
Several projects by the Missouri Department of Transportation, including the resurfacing this summer of Range Line Road, were announced Thursday at a meeting of the Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization.
Dan Salisbury, assistant district engineer for MoDOT in Joplin, told the group that the projects recently were discussed at a district meeting in Springfield.
He said resurfacing of Highway 171 from the Kansas state line to Carthage will be done next year. In 2014, the state will renovate the intersection at Stone’s Corner and will build a new Route HH interchange on the highway at Carterville. He said the work will entail building a new access to Route HH that will extend the distance that motorists have to exit the highway and merge onto Route HH.
Three projects have been added to the area’s Transportation Improvement Program for 2011 to 2014.
One is a $1.8 million renovation of Exit 1 on Interstate 44. Salisbury said Downstream Casino Resort owners will pay for that project because it is intended to make it easier for motorists to exit to the casino roundabout and entrance.
Another project added for planning is routes for new interstate ramps on Range Line Road at 36th Street. The department plans to build crossover lanes on the interstate for easier exit and entrance. There is no schedule set up yet for the ramp planning, Salisbury said.
MoDOT said in January that construction of a diverging diamond interchange there is scheduled to begin in September. The current cloverleaf interchange is too small to accommodate the volume of traffic entering and leaving the interstate, the department said. The $9 million interchange is expected to be ready by late 2013.
