Work begins to move rural school

GALENA, Kan. — Work began Tuesday to prepare the former Union Chapel School building to be dismantled and moved in large sections to a new location about a mile away.

JMH Construction Co., of Joplin, Mo., is doing the work at a discounted price. Carolyn McLean, 67, who attended the school as a child, raised the $5,500 needed to move the school. There was a threat that it would be demolished if it could not be moved.

McLean said she plans to make the building into a museum and historical center on her property, celebrating the school and other rural schools.

The two-room school first held schoolchildren in 1878 and it closed in 1966.
