Variety of holiday events planned for Joplin festival

Joplin’s annual holiday festival will start next week with the first performance of “The Living Christmas Tree” followed by the unveiling of the City Hall window display and the lighting of the city tree.

This year’s “Joplin Holiday Experience” will encompass about three weeks of activities. “The whole season will culminate with a visit by the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express” on Tuesday, Dec. 11, said Patrick Tuttle director of the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau, in a press conference held today.

This year’s window display at City Hall, with a Route 66 theme, will be unveiled at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30. Visitors downtown also are invited to tour downtown businesses who are being asked by the Downtown Joplin Alliance to decorate their windows for a contest. Visitors will decide the best window displays by casting ballots at City Hall that evening followed by the lighting of the city tree at Spiva Park.

The annual Christmas parade will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Dickensfest, a production of the historic Murphysburg District, will be offered Friday through Sunday, Dec. 7-9.

A number of concerts and productions also are on tap during the festival.
