WEBB CITY, Mo. —
A former Joplin resident came up with his own way to celebrate the Webb City Cardinals’ third straight Missouri Class 4 state football championship.
JC Chevere, now living in Oklahoma City, released a new single last week titled “Webb City Anthem” with rapper Se Mob from Tuscaloosa, Ala. The duo’s track garnered nearly 2,500 hits in a few short days on reverbnation.com, according to Chevere.
“I’ve got lots of close friends in the area, and the news of what they’ve done at Webb City made it down here,” Chevere said. “I figured that the best way to be recognized in what I do is to do something for someone else, and I thought this was the best way to do it. The popularity quickly went up after I sent it to (Webb City football) coach John Roderique. He said that they really liked what we had done.”

“I really wanted this to be a tribute to the area,” Chevere said. “I know the area has been through a lot, and so have I personally, and to see something completely positive come out of it is something that everyone can be excited about.”
Chevere, who released an album last year titled “From Tragedy to Triumph,” was a Joplin resident from 2004 until after the May 22, 2011, tornado. He said he lost close friends in the storm.
“After that, I returned to Oklahoma City, but I still think about what the area means to me,” Chevere said. “It comes through a lot in my music.”
Roderique said that when he first came into contact with Chevere, the thought of having a song about the football team was a great idea.
“I guess I can say I was really flattered to have something like this out there,” Roderique said. “This is a really neat thing.”
“My goal is to capture that camaraderie of the town and the football players,” Chevere said. “We’re trying to make like a hometown gang together. We want to present that bond that everyone in town, especially the players, feels toward the team.”
Rapper visit
JC CHEVERE will be in Webb City this weekend, speaking to football players and coaches at a banquet at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium. He plans to film video on Dec. 18 that eventually will accompany his song.

Mindenmines man charged in first-degree assault case
Barton County Prosecutor Steven Kaderly on Wednesday charged a Mindenmines man with first-degree felony assault of another man, who was in serious condition at a Joplin hospital. The felony charge against Charles Lee Kerby, 32, alleges that on Sunday he assaulted John Bryant, 58, causing serious physical injuries. The assault happened in the 800 block of Tucker Street in Mindenmines.

Workers for the office of Thomas Schweich, Missouri state auditor, have started an audit of Jasper County Circuit Court. The state review was described as “routine” by Spence Jackson, a spokesman for Schweich’s office.

Kansas regents OK 7.4 percent tuition bump at Pitt State
Tuition at Pittsburg State University will rise this fall by 7.4 percent, or $162 per semester, for a full-time, instate undergraduate. Tuition this fall will be $2,355, compared with $2,193 last fall.
