PERRYVILLE, Mo — A southeast Missouri man who has been advocating for the rights of veterans since the 1960s has been named national commander of AMVETS, one of the nation’s largest veterans service organizations.

The Southeast Missourian reported Tuesday that Jerry Hotop of Perryville, Mo., has moved to Baltimore. He took over Sept. 1 as leader of AMVETS.

Hotop was selected by more than 650 fellow AMVETS members last month at the annual convention in Louisville, Ky.

Hotop is a veteran of both the Army and the Navy. He was stationed in Korea with the Army during the 1950s and later became a member of the Navy Reserves.

Hotop sees several key issues, including health care.
