Jasper County commission acquires property next to jail

From staff reports

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A future expansion of the Jasper County jail moved a step closer on Tuesday when members of the county commission approved the purchase of two lots just east of the jail.

The purchase price for the land, at 514-518 W. Fourth St., is $41,000. The county is buying the property from Noe Salas and he and the county will share closing costs, said John Bartosh, presiding commissioner.

There currently are two vacant, dilapidated homes on the lots and the county is seeking bids for their demolition, he added.

The property had been appraised at $38,000 and Bartosh said commissioners preferred to settle on the slightly higher price rather than going to court to try to acquire the property by eminent domain.

“This is quicker and it would have cost us to go to court,” he said.

After the homes are demolished, the immediate plan for the property is for it to be used as parking for the sheriff’s department. But officials expect the property will be needed for a future expansion of the jail.
