DUQUESNE, Mo. —
New sewer and trash bills being generated by the city of Joplin have created some confusion among Joplin and Duquesne residents, city officials say.
Sewer and trash bills formerly were part of the Missouri American Water bills, but the water company has stopped providing billing services for all cities. Joplin started this month billing for its wastewater service and for the franchised trash service.
Joplin also is doing the sewer bills for Duquesne customers under contract with the city of Duquesne.
Leslie Jones, the city’s finance director, said the sewer bills must be done in cycles as the city receives meter reading information from the water company. Charges on the wastewater bills are based on the amount of water a customer uses. Once the meters are read by the water company, it takes 15 days for the city to receive that information and generate a sewer bill based on the reading.
Jones said: “The due date is 15 days after the date on the bill.”
Duquesne residents also receive their sewer bills from Joplin, though Duquesne residents can ask questions about their bills at Duquesne City Hall.
