New trail to be built between MSSU, Northpark Mall

JOPLIN, Mo. — Officials from the city of Joplin and Missouri Southern State University said Monday that they will build a 2,000-foot walking trail that will link the campus with Northpark Mall.

The trail will be built near the university’s soccer fields and will extend across Turkey Creek to the mall.

“With nearly 5,400 students and more than 500 employees, we believe physically connecting our campus to this area’s business community will only strengthen the relationship between the university and the city,” MSSU President Bruce Speck said during a news conference announcing the creation of the trail.

The trail is funded by a $300,000 Federal Highway Administration transportation enhancement grant. Construction is expected to begin late this year.
