Missouri senators to debate overseas voting bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri senators are to debate voting legislation needed for the state to comply with new federal rules aimed at helping people in the military and overseas cast ballots.

A Senate elections committee was to consider the changes Monday. States must comply by the November election.

Currently, Missourians who are out of the country request an absentee voting ballot by mail, fax or in-person. Local election authorities mail an empty ballot for the voter to complete and mail back. Troops in a combat zone can scan and e-mail their completed ballot to Missouri.

The new process would allow voters to submit applications for an absentee ballot by e-mail. Election officials could send blank ballots by e-mail.
