Inmate slips out of cuffs, evades pursuers in Miami

MIAMI, Okla. — An inmate, who slipped out of some handcuffs and bolted from a line of prisoners being led back to jail Friday morning from the Ottawa County Courthouse, remained at large several hours later.

Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies, Miami and Quapaw police, Eastern Shawnee tribal police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs were all involved in a four-hour manhunt for Herman D. Jones, 22, of Quapaw, after Jones gave corrections officers the slip about 9:40 a.m. Friday.

Detective Derek Derwin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said Jones was handcuffed to a long chain to which several other inmates were handcuffed as they were being led across a parking lot to the Ottawa County Jail from the courthouse.

Jones was able to slip his hands from the cuffs and run from the officers, Derwin said. He is believed to have fled west through the city of Miami until he reached a wooded area near the Neosho River near the intersection of M Street Northwest and Third Avenue Northwest.

During a search of the wooded area, Jones was spotted by officers once but was not caught. A police dog deployed in an effort to track him also was unable to effect his capture.

Derwin said Jones was arrested Tuesday on a felony count of pointing a firearm and misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle while revoked and driving without any insurance. He was being held at the jail without bond following an initial court appearance.

Derwin said Jones should be considered armed and dangerous. He said an additional charge of escape would be sought against him.
