WEBB CITY, Mo. —
The Webb City Council moved closer Monday night to starting construction on a $1.86 million roundabout near the Highway 171 railroad overpass.
The council approved a performance bond between the city and Sproul’s Construction Inc., which will give the company the final go ahead to begin construction in the next week.
Webb City Mayor John Biggs said that the city has already started clearing the land west of the Highway 171 overpass.
“We’re taking down trees out there and we are already scrubbing the deck,” Biggs said during Monday’s council meeting. “We’re just excited to get this underway because of how much it will benefit the city and the people who drive through here on a daily basis.”
The funding for the roundabout comes from the 2008 capital bond improvement that raised $7.7 million in funds for road construction and improvement throughout the city.
“We have to open up another artery through the city because of how much traffic is flowing through the city right now,” Biggs said. “This will open a new entry from the north to the bypass, so people will not get stuck on Madison or the Range Line route and it will also take the traffic off of the main streets here.”
Biggs said the city’s growth, coupled with growth in neighboring towns north of the city, such as Oronogo, have slowed traffic to a crawl on some days.
“I think Oronogo experienced almost a 150 percent growth from the last census,” Biggs said.
Dwight Sprouls, president of Sprouls Construction Company, said that the project shouldn’t impact traffic, at least on 171, during the winter months.
