West Nile case reported in St. Louis County

From The Associated Press

CLAYTON, Mo. — A human case of West Nile Virus has been reported in St. Louis County.

Health officials said Tuesday that the 51-year-old man has recovered. St. Louis County had one case of the mosquito-borne illness in 2009.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says a confirmed case has also been reported in Clark County in northeast Missouri. The gender and age of that person was not released.

West Nile first showed up in Missouri in 2002. Since then, about 450 have contracted the illness and 24 have died.

But the number of cases have dropped sharply in recent years. In 2002, Missouri had 168 confirmed cases. Last year, there were five.
