MSSU women's basketball team adds two transfers

Two transfers — Sam Soyez from Newman and Brittany Scott from Southern Arkansas — have joined Missouri Southern’s women’s basketball program.

Soyez, 5-foot-11 guard-forward, played two seasons at Newman for current Lions assistant Jaime Green. During those two years the Jets posted a 42-14 record, won two Heartland Conference regular-season championships and one league postseason tournament title to earn the school’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Soyez scored a career-high 15 points in an 88-81 victory over Texas A&M International last season.

As a freshman in high school, she started at point guard on a Hillsboro team that went 23-3 and won the Class 3A state championship. She moved to Goddard and helped it finish second in the 6A state tournament as a sophomore. A hip injury shortened her junior season, and she averaged 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists her senior season.

“Sam is a strong, tough competitor who is a winner,” Missouri Southern coach Maryann Mitts said in a press release. “She has strong leadership skills and the intangibles, which we hope will enable her to set the tone in both our practices and games.  

“We believe Sam will adjust well to the physicality of the MIAA and is capable of playing multiple positions due to her versatility and size. Sam will compete at both our small forward and post positions."

Soyez is the daughter of Will and Gayla Soyez and plans on majoring in communications at Southern.

Scott, 5-6 guard from Mesquite, Texas, had 48 points, 41 assists and 30 steals in 29 games as a freshman at Neosho County Community College. She went with coach Tonika Bruce to Jefferson College the next year and had 80 points, 83 assists and 39 steals as a sophomore.

Last season at Southern Arkansas, Scott played 11 games and averaged almost one point.

“Brittany brings added depth to our point guard position,” Mitts said. “Brittany is a vocal and energetic leader who will be looked upon to help guide our program both on and off the court. By her mere presence on the floor, she makes the players around her better. She finds the open player with ease and distributes the ball well to shooters.  

“We will be looking to Brittany for an added defensive spark and to push temp offensively, especially in transition."

Scott plans on majoring in math education and is the daughter of Willis Scott and Stephanie McHenry.
