EMPORIA, Kan. —
Emporia State scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and defeated Missouri Southern 8-7 to complete a sweep of an MIAA softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Turnbull Field.
The Lady Hornets won the first game 10-0 in five innings.
Missouri Southern had taken a 7-3 lead in the nightcap with a five-run fourth inning. Brooke Swadley and Haley Pypes each hit two-run doubles in the inning and Shelby Romines drove in a run with a single.
The Lions had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dawn Grass’ RBI single scored Alana Hester, then pulled to within 3-2 in the third inning when Pypes’ double to left scored Romines.
Emporia State (26-9, 13-3) broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the sixth by scoring a run on an infield out.
Pypes, as the designated player, was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.
Romines and shortstop Michala Wood were both 2-for-4.
Karley Schmelzer pitched a five-inning one-hitter in the first game. She walked two and struck out nine.
Pypes (6-6) took the loss. Grass singled to right with two outs in the fourth for the Lions’ hit.
Emporia State’s nine-hit attack was highlighted by Schmelzer’s two-run home run in the third inning that gave the Hornets a 6-0 lead. Emporia State added four runs on four hits in the fourth inning.
MSSU (19-19, 6-10) plays a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday at Fort Hays State.
