Softball Lions win thriller for a sweep

The Missouri Southern Lions used a touch of drama to complete their sweep of Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon.

Rachel Harding’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh forced extra innings and Brooklyn Farrell capped her solid day at the plate with a game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th for a 3-2 win.

MSSU — which improved to 17-13 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA — won the opener 12-0 in five innings behind the pitching of Haley Kinnison and the solid plate performances of Alana Hester, Farrell and Shelby Romines.

Southern starter Sarah Williams allowed lone runs in  each of the first two innings before finishing the nightcap with eight straight scoreless innings.

MSSU was down to its last out with the bases loaded when Harding delivered with a single to right field to score Grass and Romines. Williams allowed just two hits the rest of the way and Farrell’s single scored Brooke Smith with the winner in the 10th.

Farrell finished the day 5-for-8 with three runs and three RBI. She was 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs and two RBI in the opener while Romines was 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Hester was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI and two triples.

MSSU led 4-0 after three innings before exploding for eight runs in the fourth. Farrell’s two-run home run and Hester’s three-run triple keyed the big inning.

Kinnison threw another gem and improved to 6-2 with her complete-game, five-inning shutout. She allowed just two hits and struck out seven.

The Lions travel to Missouri S&T on Wednesday for a non-league doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. before welcoming Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri for a pair of MIAA twinbills over the weekend.
