Romines' homer boosts Lions past RiverHawks

DURANT, Okla. — Missouri Southern’s late-inning magic continued Saturday afternoon as Shelby Romines belted a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the Lions past Northeastern State 4-2 in Central Region crossover softball play hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The Lions’ games on Sunday against Arkansas-Monticello and Henderson State were rained out.

The Lions (3-1), who won twice in the late innings on Friday, return to action this weekend at the Five-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. The Lions play two games Friday against Arkansas-Monticello and Oklahoma Christian.

Against Northeastern State, Lions starter Haley Pypes gave up a run in the first inning but blanked the RiverHawks over the next six frames, including working her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

Missouri Southern tied the game in the sixth when Alana Hester beat out an infield hit and scored on Brooke Swadley’s double to center.

Using the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth, the Lions’ Brooke Smith went to second base and moved to third on a flyout by Hester.

After Swadley walked, Romines slugged a home run over the right-field wall, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Northeastern State got one run back in the bottom of the inning before Pypes retired the last hitter on a popout to earn her second victory of the season.
