Lions take third in Missouri Intercollegiate golf tournament

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — Led by Ben Starkey’s sixth-place performance, Missouri Southern wound up third Wednesday in the season-opening Missouri Intercollegiate golf tournament at The Club at Porto Cima.

The Lions, after shooting 307-299 in Tuesday’s first two rounds, closed with a 320 for a 926 total. William Woods won the team crown with 907, and Central Missouri was second with 910.

Julian Taylor of William Woods claimed medalist honors with a 5-over-par 221 on rounds on 71-74-76. Travis Mays of Central Missouri was second at 222, highlighted by a second-round 70, and Tanner Buljeski of Rockhurst and Hunter Leichner of Evangel tied for third at 225.

Starkey, a freshman from Webb City, medaled in his first tournament with the Lions with rounds of 75-76-76 for 227 total. He was one shot behind Mike Ehlers of Central Missouri and tied with Shane Kressig of William Woods.

The Lions’ Elliot Soyez, Ryan Buerk and Andy Hogenmiller all finished at 233, and Garrett Roberts had 261.

Pittsburg State’s Cole Murrin tied for ninth with 229 after a final-round 71. The Gorillas were 14th in the team standings with 954.

The first MIAA points tournament will be played on Monday and Tuesday at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg.
