MSSU softball splits with Northwestern State

Missouri Southern, trailing 3-2, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and defeated Northwestern State (Okla.) 5-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Monday at Lea Kungle Field.

Northwestern State won the first game 1-0 on a seventh-inning home run by third baseman Alyssa Taylor.

Michala Wood started the Lions’ sixth-inning rally with a one-out single and Brooklyn Farrell was hit by a pitch. With two out, Chloe Brown’s single scored Farrell, Alana Hester’s single drove in pinch hitter Sara Stearns, and a single by Brooke Swadley drove in Brown.

Missouri Southern took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on pitcher Haley Pypes’ two-out single that drove in Hester, who was 3-for-4 and led off the inning with a single and stole second.

The Lions added a run in the second inning when Farrell singled, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on Hester’s single.

Pypes (5-3) allowed three hits and one earned run in seven innings. She walked six and struck out six.

In the first game, MSSU pitcher Sarah Williams allowed a run on six hits, struck out two and walked six.

The Lions (14-10) will play 23rd-ranked Winona State (Minn.) in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today at Lea Kungle Field.
