Postseason tourneys fall victim to weather

MIAA baseball, softball pushed back one day

— This week began with three days of temperatures in the mid-80s, giving teams around the MIAA ideal conditions for practice.

However, the forecast for today calls for a 40-degree drop in temperature and a good chance for rain.

Why would anyone expect anything different this spring?

As a result, the MIAA office announced on Wednesday that the start of the conference postseason baseball and softball tournaments would be delayed one day. Both will start on Friday instead of today.

Missouri Southern’s best-of-three baseball series against Northeastern State will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Joe Becker Stadium. The third-seeded Lions and RiverHawks will play the second game at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the third game, if necessary, will be on Sunday afternoon at 1.

Pittsburg State has a series at second-seeded Central Missouri. New game times are 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, if necessary.

The other matchups have Fort Hays State at top-seeded Missouri Western and Emporia State at No. 4 Central Oklahoma.

The four series winners advance to a double-elimination tournament starting May 9 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

The MIAA’s eight-team, double-elimination softball tournament will now start at 2 p.m. Friday at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex in Overland Park, Kan.

First-round pairings have top-seeded Central Oklahoma vs. Northwest Missouri State, No. 2 Fort Hays State vs. Pittsburg State, No. 3 Missouri Western vs. Truman State and No. 4 Emporia State vs. Northeastern State.

Two winners’ bracket and two losers’ bracket games will follow at 4.

Saturday’s schedule begins with two losers’ bracket games at 11 a.m., and those winners advance to another elimination game at 1 p.m. The winners’ bracket final is set for 3 p.m., and the losers’ bracket final follows at 5.

The championship round will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, with a second game, if necessary, to follow.

The tournament champions received the league’s automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament.
