MSSU volleyball coach Trish Knight 'relieved of duties'

JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Southern volleyball coach Trish Knight was relieved of her coaching duties on Monday,  according to a release from the MSSU athletics department.
Knight, hired on April 19, 2011, was 5-55 in her two seasons. The Lions were 5-25 in their first year under Knight before going 0-30 last fall.
"We want to wish Coach Knight the best of luck in the future and thank her for the work she has done over the last two seasons," MSSU Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman said in a release.
Knight came to Missouri Southern after spending less than two seasons as head coach at Texas Tech, where she resigned in the middle of the 2010 season. Her Texas Tech teams were 5-44, including a 3-17 (1-10 Big 12) mark at the time of her resignation.
Texas Tech director of athletics Gerald Myers released a statement after Knight's departure that said the program needed "to be heading in a different direction."
Knight was hired at MSSU six months after her resignation at Texas Tech, likely on the strength of her impressive junior college and high school resumes. She started the Missouri State-West Plains program in 1993 and turned it into a powerhouse, compiling a 676-170-3 record and 10 straight Region 16 titles.
Before that, she led West Plains High School to four consecutive state championships.
"Trish rose from an extremely talented pool of coaching candidates and her previous record speaks for itself," Bruggeman said, in a release, after Knight's hiring. "She started the program at West Plains and turned it into one of the most successful at the junior college level."
A national search for Knight¹s replacement at MSSU will begin immediately.
