Lions' Christian Salecich loses final year of eligibility

From staff reports

— Missouri Southern senior guard Christian Salecich has lost his final year of eligibility with the Lions.

Salecich, who transferred to the Lions last season after two years at Saint Louis University, had utilized one year of post high school graduation to play organized basketball in Australia. Because of that year, he will not be allowed to play a fourth year of college basketball.

After learning about Salecich’s year of play in Australia, Missouri Southern officials filed a waiver with the NCAA for Salecich in July to attempt to restore his final year of eligibility.

The NCAA rejected the waiver, and MSSU then filed an appeal of that decision in August. Southern officials learned this week that the appeal also has been denied.

Salecich will remain at Missouri Southern and assist with the men’s basketball team this season as he finishes work toward his degree. He is scheduled to graduate in May 2013.

Salecich played in every game — including 21 starts — during the Lions’ 22-8 campaign last season. He averaged 6.3 points and 26 minutes per game while shooting 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent at the foul line. He also had 44 assists and 23 steals.
