Lions take 10-game win streak into weekend

Missouri Southern, riding a 10-game winning streak, takes on Washburn in an MIAA doubleheader at 2 p.m. today at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Lions (21-11, 15-9 MIAA) are in third place in the MIAA standings behind league-leader Missouri Western (19-1) and Central Missouri (18-5). Pittsburg State (15-10) is fourth.

The Lions haven’t lost since March 20 when they dropped the second game of a doubleheader 7-3 at Northeastern State.

In the 10 games since then, the Lions, who are batting .305 as a team, have outscored their opponents 62-28 and have not allowed more than four runs in a game.

Catcher Sam Ryan leads the team in batting (.383), doubles (13) and slugging percentage (.548). Shortstop Michael McCoy is second in batting (.356) and leads the team in hits (47) and total bases (67). Dallas Burke is third in batting (.333) and leads the team in walks (23) and on-base percentage (.457).

The Lions’ top four starting pitchers are senior left-hander Brett Abell (3-2, 4.34 ERA), junior right-handers David Reese (3-3, 4.11) and Drew Noble (5-1, 4.65) and freshman left-hander Payton Walker (4-3, 2.38).

Washburn (6-20, 6-19), which is batting .280 as a team, has had seven games canceled because of bad weather. The Icabods are led by designated hitter Riley Price, who is batting .420. Second baseman Taylor Herrington is next at .313 and leads the team in slugging percentage (.530).

The Ichabods’ top starting pitcher is Drew Ridley (5-5, 4.40).

The three-game series concludes with a nine-inning game scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
