Griebling named first team on MIAA all-conference baseball team

Missouri Southern senior pitcher Cody Griebling is a first-team selection on the MIAA all-conference baseball team.

Lions second baseman Luke Acosta made the second team, and utility players Jesse Kinzey and Cullen Baxter, outfielder Michael McCoy, catcher Sam Ryan and pitcher David Reese all received honorable mention on the team, released Thursday morning.

Griebling, a right-hander who was an honorable mention pick last season, helped the Lions to the third best team earned run average in the league. He led the conference in innings (87), ranked second in victories (9) and complete games (9) and was fourth in strikeouts (68) before Thursday’s 9-6 loss to Fort Hays State.

Acosta, who played every inning at second base this season, batted .337 and led the teams in runs, doubles and triples.

McCoy led the Lions with his .374 average, and Kinzey batted .333, Baxter .306 and Ryan .302. Ryan led the team in home runs and runs batted in.

Reese went 6-3 with a team-low 2.43 earned run average.

Pittsburg State pitcher Matt Stalcup and outfielder Chase Barnes received honorable mention.

Regular-season champion Central Missouri had the league’s pitcher of the year (Lee Stoppelman), player of the year (shortstop Bret Schwartz) and coach of the year (Tom Myers).

Emporia State pitcher Shawn Talkington was the freshman of the year.

Drew Miller of Southwest Baptist, who prepped at Neosho and played last season at Ozark Christian College, is the first team all-conference catcher.
