Ten Lions enter D-II nationals in track

Ten Missouri Southern track and field athletes are in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend for the NCAA Division II indoor championships.

Competition began Thursday with the men’s and women’s weight throw, but most of the events will be held today and Saturday at the CrossPlex Complex.

The Lions’ Jayce Thomas, ranked No. 7 in the heptathon, starts his competition with the 60-meter dash. He’ll then move to the field events for the long jump, shot put and high jump. The final three events — 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters — are on Saturday starting at 9:15.

Sprinter Jeff Fraley has his preliminaries today in the 60 at 4 p.m. and 200 at 6:25. He’s seeded fifth in the 200 and 12th in the 400. The finals are on Saturday at 3:50 for the 60 and 5:30 for the 200.

Clark Tanksley qualified 11th in the high jump and competes today at 5:15.

Saturday’s field events schedule for the men has Darion Boure in the triple jump at 12:30, Michael Juergens in the pole vault at 3:30 and Seth Hackney in the shot put at 4. Boure is ranked ninth, Hackney 10th and Juergens 15th.

Four Lion women qualified in five field events, and all four are in action today.

Brittani Reagan is in the long jump at 2, and Kylie Cornman is in the shot put at 3:30. Cornman qualified 11th in her event, and Reagan 16th.

The Lions have two entries in the pole vault at 3:15. Melanie Bower qualified ninth and Sydney Haase 15th.
