Lions, Pitt State to resume rivalry

— Missouri Southern will resume its rivalry against Pittsburg State with an MIAA doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Joe Becker Stadium.

The two games will count toward the Sonic Trophy Series between the two schools.

Pittsburg State lost the third game of a three-game series against Nebraska-Kearney 14-7 Monday at Pittsburg. The Gorillas won the first two games 13-10 and 17-6.

The Gorillas (5-2 overall, 3-2 MIAA) are batting .350 as a team and have four players in their starting lineup who are batting over .400.

Evan Thomas leads PSU with a .500 average, four extra-base hits (including two home runs) in seven games and 11 runs batted in.

He is tied for the team lead in hits (12) with Brad Foss, who is batting .462. Tory Stoffregen leads the team with four doubles and is batting .435, and Galena product Jacoby Martin is batting .412.

Matt Stalcup leads the Gorillas’ pitching staff with a 2-0 record and 2.00 ERA. He has allowed five hits in nine innings and has 14 strikeouts.

The Lions, batting .302 as a team, are led by catcher/outfielder Dallas Burke’s .395 average. Right fielder Nick Doughty leads the team in hits (16) and RBI (11) to go along with his .372 average, and catcher/outfielder Sam Ryan is batting .357.

David Reece (2-1), who pitched a seven-inning complete game against Fort Hays State, leads the Lions in innings pitched and has a 3.33 ERA.
