Mules roll past Southern for series win

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Central Missouri scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Missouri Southern 12-2 in the final game of a three-game series Sunday at Crane Stadium.

UCM won the series two games to one and remained in second place behind league-leader Missouri Western.

The Mules (27-8, 21-7 MIAA), ranked No. 5 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, connected for six runs on five hits in the first inning against Lions starting pitcher Drew Noble (5-3). Noble pitched the second game of a doubleheader Thursday at Emporia State.

Third baseman Kyle Grieshaber was 3-for-4, including a three-run home run in the third inning off Lions reliever David Reese. Leadoff batter Samuel Domingue was 3-for-3 and scored three runs, and center fielder Trevor Jones was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the first inning, first baseman John Oropeza singled in two runs and right fielder Kevin Gratza drove in two runs with a triple.

The Lions trailed 12-0 going into the sixth inning when they scored two runs and ended the game for Mules starting pitcher Chris Fitzpatrick (3-0), a left-hander who allowed both runs on five hits, walked none and struck out two.

Michael McCoy, who was 2-for-3 and scored a run, led off the sixth with an infield single and moved to second on Dallas Burke’s infield single. Will Wagner drove in a run with a ground ball to first base, and Tee Helsel’s single to center scored Sam Ryan, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Missouri Southern (25-15, 19-13 MIAA) returns home to face Central Oklahoma in an MIAA doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Joe Becker Stadium.
