MSSU softball goes 2-1 in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY — Missouri Southern swept a doubleheader Saturday against Newman, winning the first game 6-4 in eight innings and the second game 6-2 at Ann Lacy Stadium.

Brooklyn Farrell drove in the go-ahead run for the Lions in the eighth inning of the first game with a double to center field that drove in Kathryn Goins. Brooke Swadley then drove in Farrell with a single to left.

Swadley and Brown each had two hits. Brown had two RBIs and Dawn Grass drove in two runs with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, her third home run of the day.

Brown’s two-run double in the second inning scored Goins and Michala Wood and gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Lions starting pitcher Sarah Williams tossed a complete game. She allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six.

In the second game, Hannah Cook pitched a six-hit complete game for the Lions. She had no walks or strikeouts.

The Lions’ 12-hit attack was led by Alana Hester, Grass, Farrell and Brown, who each had two hits. Rachel Harding scored two runs and Brown had two RBIs.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Brown and an RBI double by Hester.

MSSU (10-3) added three runs in the fourth inning. Farrell and Harding started the rally with one-out singles. Brown drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Hester singled, loading the bases.

Swadley drove in the second run when she was hit by a pitch, then Brown scored on a passed ball.

Grass led off the fifth inning with a home run.

The doubleheader sweep came after Oklahoma City had defeated the Lions 10-4.

Shelby Romines, who was 2-for-3, gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with a first-inning double that scored Hester. The Lions added three runs in the third inning when Swadley drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Grass hit a two-run home run to left field that scored Romines.
