JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. —
Tee Helsel hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Drew Noble scattered five hits in seven innings as Missouri Southern defeated Lincoln 6-3 in a nine-inning MIAA game Friday.
The Lions (12-11, 8-9 MIAA) have won four of their last five conference games since they snapped a six-game losing streak last week against Truman.
The game was the first of a three-game series that was scheduled to be played at Joe Becker Stadium but was moved to Lincoln because of the threat of rain or snow Saturday in Joplin.
It counted as a home game for the Lions, who batted as the home team.
The series is scheduled to resume with a doubleheader at 10 a.m. today.
After Lincoln (2-14, 2-11) cut the Lions’ lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the seventh, Helsel’s home run to left-center field drove in Dallas Burke and Thomas Wilson.
Noble (4-1) walked two and struck our four before he was relieved by David Reese in the eighth inning. Reese allowed a run on three hits, walked one and struck out one.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Michael McCoy’s sacrifice fly that scored Zack Steadman.
Shaun Hoover gave the Lions a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run single that scored Helsel and Sam Ryan. Helsel was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Ryan was 2-for-5.
Lincoln cut the lead to 3-2 when Colby Shepherd’s two-run single in the seventh scored Zach Roberts and Caleb Kemna. Shepherd, a product of Nevada High School, was 2-for-5 and drove in all three of Lincoln’s runs.
The Blue Tigers added a run in the top of the ninth off Reese when Shepherd’s single drove in Jonathan Grishman.
