Missouri Southern returns to MIAA baseball action today with a doubleheader against Emporia State scheduled for 3 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Lions (8-7, 4-5 MIAA) are in the midst of an 11-game homestand that wraps up this weekend with a three-game series against Truman.
Central Missouri, 11-1 overall, leads the MIAA with an 8-0 record, followed by Missouri Western at 5-0. The other teams in the league, except Lincoln (2-3), have at least four conference losses.
The Lions are batting .311 as a team, led by Dallas Burke at .400 with a team-high 11 walks. Sam Ryan, batting .389, has team highs in total bases (31) and doubles (7). Right fielder Nick Doughty (.333) and shortstop Thomas Wilson (.320) round out the top four.
The Lions’ pitching staff is led by David Reese (2-1, 3.33 ERA), who has walked one and struck out 20 in 24 1/3 innings. Ryan Bates (2-1, 5.06 ERA) has started three games and has 21 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings.
Overall, the Lions have allowed 133 hits in 116 1/3 innings with a 4.80 ERA.
Emporia State (6-11, 5-8) is coming off a split in a doubleheader Monday at home against Fort Hays State. Emporia State won the first game 3-2 and lost the second game 5-1.
Through the Hornets’ first 16 games, catcher Todd Schultz led the team with a .394 batting average and a team-high 11 RBIs. Third baseman Eric Dawson was next at .379, followed by shortstop Ashton McCoy at .322. As a team, the Hornets were batting .282.
The Hornets’ pitching staff has been led by Dakota McKaskle (2-2, 2.96 ERA), who has walked one and struck out 17 in 24 1/3 innings. Garrett Bane (0-2, 4.19 ERA) has the next best ERA among the Hornets’ usual starters. As a team, Emporia State has allowed 171 hits in 131 innings with a 5.56 ERA.
