Southern women build lead in MIAA indoor track

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Capped by a meet record-setting performance by the distance medley relay team, Missouri Southern’s women lead the team standings after two days of competition in the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

The Lions, winning two events on Saturday, have 47.5 points, followed by Lincoln 36 and Central Missouri 30.

Lincoln, however, put itself in good position to make a run — literally — for the team championship. The Blue Tigers, as expected, dominated the preliminaries in the sprints — headlined by the top five qualifiers in the 200 meters.

Missouri Southern’s men picked up multiple points in two field events, and they are second in the team standings with 46 points. Central Missouri is the leader with 58, and Pittsburg State is third with 29.

Missouri Southern’s distance medley quartet of Kaitlyn Belisle, Jasmin Hughes, Sydney Potts and Rachel Schrader won the final race in 12 minutes, 16.47 seocnds, more than four seconds off the former record set by Emporia State in 2009.

The Lions’ Melanie Bower repeated as the pole vault champion, clearing 12 feet, 63⁄4 inches — more than five inches higher than her previous best this season. Teammate Sydney Haase tied for third (12-03⁄4), and Ashleigh McFarland was fifth (11-9).

In other field events, the Lions’ Brittani Reagan was second in the triple jump (39-6), and Kylie Cornman took third in the weight throw (54-2).

The Lions advanced four entries to today’s running finals — Hughes in the 60 and 200, Potts in the 800 and JeAnna Sheppard in the 60 hurdles.

Missouri Southern’s men picked up 28 of their 46 points in the triple jump and shot put.

Seth Hackney placed second in the shot (54-111⁄2), and Dustin Green (53-111⁄4) and Evan Moore (53-13⁄4) took fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the triple jump, Darion Boure was third (48-0), Jayce Thomas fourth (47-73⁄4) and Dominique Jenkins seventh (47-1).

Clark Tanksley clared 6-103⁄4 to take second in the high jump. Emporia State’s Briar Ploude won with 7-21⁄2, one-half inch higher than the meet record set by Missouri Southern’s Kevin Dotson in 1999.

In the heptathlon, Thomas finished third with 4,891 points, the same total he had in a meet earlier this season at Missouri Southern. A second place in the pole vault and third in the 60 hurdles were his highest finishes in Saturday’s three events.

The Lions’ Alex Mason, Jazz Allen, Miles Migliara and Andrew Webster teamed up to finish fifth in the DMR.

In the sprints, Jeff Fraley had the fastest qualifying time in the 200 meters (21.75), and he was fourth in the 60 (6.86, just .05 off the pace).

Also qualifying for today’s finals are Jazz Allen in the 60 hurdles and Anthony Price and Tanksley in the 400. Price qualified second in the 400 at 49.31.

GORILLAS CLAIM TWO SECONDS

Pittsburg State’s men were led by second places from Marquise Cushon in the triple jump (48-31⁄2) and Adam Volkert in the 5,000 (14:47.82).

The Gorillas’ Anthony Yates, Justin Ballock, Jordan Peters and Devon Young were third in the DMR. Also scoring points for PSU were Keenan Soles (fifth in the triple jump), Jeff Piepenbrink (sixth in the heptathlon) and Anthony Forbes (seventh in the high jump).

PSU’s women rank sixth with 16 points.

The DMR team of Amanda Callaway, Olivia Boone, Casey Epps and Bridgette McCormick finished fourth.

The Gorillas also had a fifth place by Larissa Richards in the weight throw, sixth places by Jalexis Peterson in the triple jump and Hannah DeVries in the 5,000 and an eighth place by Ashley Bowman in the pole vault.
