Gray wins 100th

Missouri Southern split a pair games on Sunday, falling 7-1 to Oklahoma City University after beating Illinois-Springfield 10-9 to give coach Bill Gray his 100th win at MSSU.

Gray, a 1993 graduate of Pittsburg State, is in his fifth season at Missouri Southern.

The Lions, now 11-4 on the season, had to hang on for the win in the opener.

Kathryn Goins hit her first career home run, a two-run shot as the Lions scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth for an 8-4 lead. Goins and Michala Wood added back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth to make it 10-5 before the Prairie Stars made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.

The Prairie Stars scored four times to cut their deficit to one run before Kayce Moore forced a ground out to end the game.

Wood was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI in the game while Alana Hester went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Haley Kinneson earned the win after allowing five runs — three earned — and striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings.

The Lions were shut down by Oklahoma City pitcher Rachel Penner in the nightcap.

Penner allowed just one run on four hits while striking out 10.

The Stars, meanwhile, reached MSSU pitcher Sarah Williams for four runs on five hits. Just one of those runs were earned as the Lions committed a pair of errors.

Shelby Romines accounted for MSSU’s lone run with a first-inning home run, her sixth of the season.

MSSU returns to action on Saturday when they host Central Missouri and Upper Iowa.
