Southern splits with RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Missouri Southern Lions baseball team remains .500 on the season after splitting a doubleheader against Northeastern State on Wednesday.

Missouri Southern (11-11 overall, 7-9 MIAA) edged the RiverHawks 5-4 in extra innings before dropping the nightcap 7-3.

In the first game, the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. Missouri Southern scored two in the first when Shaun Hoover tripled to knock in Nick Doughty, and Michael McCoy singled to score Hoover. The Lions added another run in the third on an RBI single from Tee Helsel to score Sam Ryan.

Missouri Southern scored another run when Will Wagner hit a sacrifice fly to score Dallas Burke in the fifth.

However, Northeastern State responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4.

The Lions scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth by taking advantage of some wild pitching. Nick Doughty was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Hoover, a wild pitch put runners at second and third for McCoy. He drove home Doughty with a sacrifice fly.

Missouri Southern’s David Reese threw a perfect eighth inning for his third save of the season. Relief pitcher Payton Walker earned the win after pitching 22⁄3 of one-hit ball.

Ryan led the Lions at the plate by going 3-for-4.

In the second game, Northeastern State took a 6-1 lead after four innings and held on for the 7-3 win. Reese recorded the loss for Missouri Southern, allowing nine hits before being taken out with two outs in the fourth inning.

McCoy was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Missouri Southern will be home at Joe Becker Stadium for a three-game series against Lincoln with two games on Saturday and one scheduled for Sunday.
