JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. —
The Missouri Southern Lions used complete-game performances from pitchers Brett Abell and Payton Walker to sweep Lincoln in a baseball doubleheader Saturday.
Abell pitched a two-hitter to lift the Lions to a 3-0 win in the opener. Walker struck out six batters in a 7-4 victory.
Abell, a senior lefty from Miami, fanned seven batters while walking one.
Missouri Southern (14-11 overall, 10-9 MIAA) scored quickly in the opener. Dallas Burke homered to left center in the first, and Dane Kolkmeyer recorded a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Michael McCoy added a home run to left in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. That is all the scoring the Lions needed as Abell registered his second dominating performance in his past three starts. Against Truman State on March 16, Abell allowed only one earned run in a nine-inning complete game to win MIAA pitcher of the week honors.
In the second game Saturday, the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Missouri Southern then scored a run each in the fourth and sixth innings, while adding two insurance runs in the eighth.
Burke started the scoring with an RBI single, and Sam Ryan added a two-run single in the first inning.
Lincoln (2-16, 2-14 MIAA) tied the game at 4 with a two-run fifth inning.
Shaun Hoover knocked in Kolkmeyer in the sixth to put the Lions back on top. Hoover recorded another RBI in the eighth, scoring Keith Freeman. McCoy then knocked in Hoover.
McCoy was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Thomas Wilson, Ryan and Tee Helsel recorded two hits each.
The Lions have won six of their last seven games. They will be at home against Northeastern State for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
