Fraley sweeps 60, 400 at Missouri Southern Invitational

JOPLIN, Mo. — Jeff Fraley of Missouri Southern led from the start and won the 400 meters Saturday at the Missouri Southern Invitational at Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Fraley, a sophomore, also won the 60 meters and achieved provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Division II national meet in both events.

“I’ll take it. It’s the first indoor 400 I’ve run,” Fraley said. “I can’t ask for too much in our first meet after break. Our team is looking good. Our other runners did well.”

Missouri Southern, ranked 13th, won two other events. Jazz Allen won the 60-meter hurdles and Miles Migliara won the 800 meters.

Among finishers in the top three for the Lions were Darion Boure, second in the triple jump; Andrew Webster, third in the mile; Michael Juergens, third in the pole vault, and Dominique Jenkins, third in the triple jump.

In the shot put, the Lions’ Dustin Green placed second and teammate Evan Moore was third.

Colbie Snyder of Pittsburg State won the pole vault with a leap of 15 feet, 7 inches, the second time this season he has scored a provisional mark.

“It was kind of a low provisional,” said Snyder, a senior from Joplin. “It’s good to know that early in the season you’re getting decent.”

Snyder said his goal this season is to clear 17 feet, which would top his personal best of 16-10 3/4. “I think it will come in a few meet,” he said. “We just need a little more practice to get consistent.”

Missouri Southern’s women, like the men, won four events on the final day of the meet. Kylie Cornman won the shot put with a provisional mark of 45 feet, 1/2-inch.

“That’s just a step up,” said Cornman, whose winning distance came on her final throw. “If I can make a good throw today after a break like that, then in a couple of weeks I’ll be making good throws consistently.”

Brittani Reagan won the triple jump by outdistancing teammates Mahogany Jones, who was second, and Shelby Newell, who was third.

Sydney Potts, a freshman, won the 800 meters, and Rachel Schrader won the mile.

“We’re just shaking the rust off,” said Lions head coach Patty Vavra. “That’s what happens when you’ve been away from it for a month. Rachel Schrader ran well. She was out there by herself.

“We’re getting back into competitive form,” she said. “We have a long indoor and outdoor season ahead of us. I know there’s some frustration with the times and distances.”

Sydney Haase and Melanie Bower had provisional heights in the pole vault with jumps of 11-8.

Amber White and Emily Weldin placed second and third in the 600-yard run, while Kaitlyn Belisle and Marlee Tegenkamp were second and third in the 3,000 meters.

Miriah Johnson, a freshman from Joplin, was third in the high jump, and JeAnna Sheppard was third in the 60 hurdles. The 4x400 relay team of Reagan, Jasmin Hughes, White and Weldin placed third.
