Meals restored to seniors
COMMERCE, Okla. — The serving of hot meals to senior citizens in Commerce and Quapaw has been restored, thanks to the generosity of neighboring community leaders. Members of the Picher Development Authority, with the support of Cardin leaders, voted recently to help the Delaware, Ottawa, Craig Senior Services (DOCS) program to sustain hot meal provisions through a large part of 2010 by contributing $65,000 to the senior nutrition program, according to Picher City Attorney Erik Johnson.

Kansas consumer advocates scrutinize Empire rates case
An agency that advocates for consumers in Kansas utility rate cases wants residents to turn out when a public hearing is scheduled on Empire District Electric Co.’s proposed hike for Kansas customers. Empire on Wednesday filed the rate case with the Kansas Corporation Commission, seeking a nearly 25 percent increase in annual revenues, or $5.2 million. The utility based in Joplin has 10,102 Kansas customers in Baxter Springs, Columbus, Galena, Riverton and surrounding areas. It is Empire’s first rate increase proposal for Kansas customers since 2005.

Empire seeks rate increase for Kansas customers
Empire District Electric Co. is seeking a rate increase for its Kansas customers amounting to a nearly 25 percent increase in revenues. The impact on residential customers, if the request is approved, would be a rate increase of nearly 27 percent. The utility based in Joplin filed its rate case Wednesday with the Kansas Corporation Commission. It seeks an annual revenue increase of $5.2 million.

COLUMBUS, Kan. — Health departments in Cherokee and Crawford counties are out of seasonal flu vaccine, while swine flu vaccine continues to trickle in slowly. A spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the situation is the same statewide. Betha Elliott, administrator for the Cherokee County Health Department, told the Cherokee County commissioners on Monday that the health department was out of seasonal flu vaccine.

Ottawa County joins program offering discounts on prescription drugs
MIAMI, Okla. — The Ottawa County commissioners have agreed to participate in a nationwide program that could reduce prescription drug costs for some county residents. Through its membership in the National Association of Counties, Ottawa County will soon be able to make prescription discount cards available to residents in its jurisdiction, said commission Chairman John Clarke.

PITTSBURG, Kan. — For a year, the Southeast Kansas Recycling Center has seemed to take one step forward and two steps backward. Within two months of opening at a more centrally located, full-of-possibilities area on Joplin Street, the center was torched by arsonists. Authority for Treece buyout approved by U.S. Senate
TREECE, Kan. — The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed legislation that includes authority for the buyout of residents in the former mining town of Treece. The authority is included in the 2010 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Conference Report, and will head to President Barack Obama’s desk for his signature into law.

Police: Defendant fabricated drive-by shooting of home
GIRARD, Kan. — A man who reported a drive-by shooting earlier this month at his home in Mulberry has been charged with making a false report. Crawford County Sheriff Sandy Horton said Duane E. Wahl, 33, was arrested Wednesday by Mulberry police after a joint investigation with the Sheriff’s Department determined that Wahl himself shot at his house. Wahl had told police that a man in a silver, newer model Toyota pickup truck with an extended cab fired shots about 12:20 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at his home at 410 W. Perry St. Wahl told police that he did not know who the man was.

Jury returns guilty verdict in Columbus murder trial
COLUMBUS, Kan. — A Cherokee County jury on Thursday found Robert Jarman guilty of second-degree murder in the 2007 shooting death of his wife, Suzanne Jarman. Robert and Suzanne Jarman’s children, Carly and Tyler, and other members of the family wept openly in court when the verdict was announced. Suzanne Jarman was 42 when she died on Aug. 22, 2007.

Clark, owner of Pittsburg Appliance, lost the phone Sept. 4 at a travel center at highways 71 and 76 in Anderson, Mo. The phone — a metallic gray Cingular 8525 HTC — was loaded with information he needs to conduct his business.

Columbus murder trial case to go to jury
COLUMBUS, Kan. — Robert Jarman’s psychiatrist on Wednesday described “a pretty potent cocktail” of prescriptions Jarman was taking that could impair him. The drugs were prescribed by the psychiatrist, a family doctor and at least one other doctor, defense attorney Sam Marsh said outside the courtroom during a break in the trial.
